Benefits

No optical material can be worked as well as glass, it is non-deforming and produces good optical surfaces (polishes well).

Mineral glasses produce as a rule low color dispersion (Abbe constant) and, therefore, good optical imaging (with no color fringe). Glass does not deform (bend) when being worked, it is temperature resistant and of a high optical quality.
